It’s an exciting time to be involved in Australian dairy. There are already a growing number of successful independent dairy brands. However, the fact that we import over 100,000 tonnes of dairy annually and growing at 4,000 tonnes each year, clearly shows that there is huge opportunity for small local brands.
Cressida is deeply concerned by the rapid decline of small family-owned dairy farms in Australia. In 1980, there were 22000 dairy farms, however today, there are a little over 5000.
Cressida passionately believes there are strong and profitable alternatives for family-run dairies. Specifically, by producing their own branded products such as cheese, yoghurt, gelato and branded milk.
Dairy Cocoon is a not-for-profit digital platform and support hub which provides a pathway for willing dairy farmers to begin their journey up the value chain.
By helping small family owned dairy farmers with business and marketing skills and industry education, they can create their own niche dairy products and tap into a growing consumer demand for Australian owned dairy products. Cressida’s vision is to give Dairy Cocoon members the tools to transform their operations to be price setters rather than price takers and secure an enduring legacy for their family’s farming future.
